2021 Cleveland Browns Draft Tracker

Breakdown of all the Cleveland Browns draft picks from the 2021 NFL Draft.

First Round Pick 26 Overall

Greg Newsome II, CB, Northwestern

Quick Take: Great pick here by the Cleveland Browns. With the addition of Newsome, the Browns continue turning a 2020 weakness into a 2021 strength. At the time this is being written, the Browns have added John Johnson, Troy Hill, Greedy Williams returning from injury, and Grant Delpit will hopefully have a meaningful impact on the roster.

Guardrail Fit: If we are looking at the Browns guardrails, Greg Newsome fits the bill. Cornerback is one of the “Key Positions” listed. As for “Analytics: Big data and odds“, Newsome has received some love. According to PFF, Newsome is their 21st ranked player overall. In 387 defensive snaps, 223 in coverage, Newsome only allowed 12 receptions, 93 yards, and ZERO touchdowns.

Age guardrail: May 18, 2000. Newsome will turn 21 years old at the beginning of the 2021 NFL Season. CHECK. We have heard many times the Browns not only value production, but they also value youth.

Second Round Pick 52 Overall (trade with Panthers)

Quick Take: Perfect addition to the Browns defense. With proper development, Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah (JOK) becomes a tight end eraser for the Browns, a player athletic enough to keep up with Lamar Jackson, and someone who can cover the slot if asked. In the immediate future, JOK can learn from Anthony Walker and take his time developing behind Jacob Phillips, Sione Takitaki, and Mack Wilson. Additionally, JOK would add speed to the Special Teams unit as well. Ultimately, this pick was about more than just adding talent. Adding JOK was about being able to find answers against the top teams in the AFC.

Guardrail Fit: BINGO. If we are looking at the Browns guardrails, JOK will again fit the mold of what this team looks for. While linebacker is not a listed “Key Position“, JOK brings so much more in coverage and the ability to spy Lamar Jackson. As for “Analytics: Big data and odds“, JOK graded out well over the last two years at Notre Dame against the run and elite in coverage. According to PFF, JOK is their 19th ranked player overall.

Age Guardrail: November 4, 1999. JOK is 21 years old entering the 2021 NFL Season. CHECK

Third Round Pick 91 Overall

Quick Take: The questions in the wide receiver room have been glaring all offseason. If OBJ isn’t 100%, where does the speed element of this team come from? If we can’t extend the field vertically, how can we help Baker and take pressure off the offensive line? While one pick doesn’t fix all of those problems, it is a start. Schwartz walks into the Browns’ locker room with Olympic level speed to be a lid lifter. As Schwartz said during his introductory press conference, “every time I go deep, I feel like it’s a home run, a touchdown play.” His deep speed is special and could add a new dimension to the team on offense and he might be electric as a return man on Special Teams.

Guardrail Fit: While this pick is not viewed as “ELITE”, like the previous two picks, Schwartz is an “ABOVE AVERAGE” pick, according to PFF. He does not fit a Key Position but does add depth to a position of need, especially if the Browns move on from Odell Beckham or Jarvis Landry after 2021. According to PFF, Schwartz was 171st overall on their big board.

Age Guardrail: September 5, 2000. 20 years old at the start of the 2021 NFL Season. CHECK.
