The Cleveland Browns preseason has officially begun and oh boy, is there a ton of competition at the quarterback position.
Just not the type of competition fans anticipated going into the season.
It’s no secret to most who the presumed week one starter will be for the Browns on September 7th, as Joe Flacco has gotten a fair amount of the first team reps.
The question is, how will the rest of this quarterback room shape out?
Kenny Pickett has been dealing what is believed to be a pretty significant hamstring injury; one that has kept him out of 11 on 11 reps in practice altogether.
With him out of the picture, that leaves the two rookies.
At third on the QB depth chart, we then have the third-round pick, Dillion Gabriel, who although has impressed the staff with his ability to pick up and process the offense quickly, has not exactly looked consistent in practice according to multiple reports from various media.
Gabriel is also dealing a less-significant hamstring injury, which did keep him out of the first preseason game.
However, Gabriel will hopefully get his opportunity to showcase why the Browns selected him if he gets to play Saturday against the Philadelphia Eagles.
That left the Browns with starting Shedeur Sanders against the Panthers, while picking up Tyler “Snoop” Huntley to fill out another spot for preseason play.
With the limited availability from other quarterbacks, the Browns gave Sanders a real shot at getting the majority of reps vs Carolina.
And too be honest? Sanders really showed some positives the Browns and their fans cannot ignore.
Finishing the day going 14 of 23 attempts, 138 passing yards and three scoring drives (two of which were passing TDs by Sanders), Sanders looked to have passed his first test as a Cleveland Brown.
Sanders showed some consistent poise in the pocket, never looking shook or like the moment was too big. He made decisive throws and completed passes in some tight windows.
Besides a few negative plays, he controlled the offense well and, more importantly, found a way to get the Browns in the endzone every time they reached the 20-yard-line or better.
Unfortunately, as news came out on Wednesday that Sanders is dealing with a oblique issue, fans are more than likely not seeing him play against the Eagles.
However, the Browns cannot overlook how well Sanders handled his first test, or how veteran teammates Myles Garrett and David Njoku enjoyed his presence on the team.
That alone speaks higher volumes than any hot take the media will stir up in the coming weeks.
So, what’s next? Well, it’s the Browns. Fans know good and well how much of a wildcard this Browns staff can be.
Let’s just hope the staff sees what fans have seen.
